2006 July 25 - Lincolnshire Buffalo to undertake London Triathlon

A lincolnshire man will be taking on the huge challenge of the Olympic distance London triathlon early next month to help raise funds for children with liver disease.

Peter Nadin (52) from Sleaford is a member of The Grand Lodge of England of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB) - a national social and benevolent organisation with 25,000 members worldwide.  Peter was inspired to compete in the event in aid of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) after the RAOB’s ‘Grand Primo’ (Chief Officer) for 2006 chose CLDF as his charity appeal of the year.

CLDF is a unique national charity that fights childhood liver diseases through funding pioneering research and educating healthcare professionals and the general public. The charity also provides professional, emotional support to thousands of families affected by childhood liver disease.

The London Triathlon is the biggest event of its kind in the world and Peter will be taking part in the Olympic distance triathlon on Sunday 6th August.  This will see him completing a 1.5k open water swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run over a course that passes many famous London sites including the London Eye and the Tower of London.

Peter, a sales administrator, has been a member of the ROAB since 1979 and has held a number of senior positions for the organisation.  Peter attends the ‘lodge’ that meets at The Solo Club, Sleaford.

Peter has also been a member of Sleaford Striders AC for a number of years and is currently club chairman. He has completed seven marathons and 50+ half marathons over recent years.  In 2004 as he turned 50, Peter decided he needed a new challenge and decided to try duathlon’s (running, cycling and running) and triathlon’s (swimming, cycling and running). Peter completed his first duathlon in March 2005 and first ‘sprint’ triathlon (shorter distance triathlon) in June 2005.

Peter says, “I entered the London triathlon but was having second thoughts until I learnt about CLDF’s work through our Grand Primo. I decided to raise sponsorship for taking part and this has really given me the incentive to train hard, it will also help spur me on during the event itself.  Few people are aware that two children are diagnosed with a liver disease every day in the UK.  Most of these liver diseases are life threatening and all mean a lifetime of care.  I hope people will support me so I can raise as much as possible for this crucial charity.  The triathlon will be a huge challenge, I couldn’t even ride a bike until 2003!”

Catherine Arkley, chief executive of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, says, “There are over 100 different liver diseases which can affect any child of any age and quite simply we don’t know why they occur.  We desperately need more funds to continue our support, education and research programme’s and we are very grateful to Peter for his tremendous fundraising efforts on our behalf.  We wish him every success on the day.”

Anyone wishing to sponsor Peter can call CLDF on 0121 212 3839.

The Royal Antediluvian order of Buffaloes
The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes is a worldwide social and benevolent organisation with ‘Lodges’ in many countries which been in existence since the 1820’s. The Grand Lodge of England, whose head quarters are based in Harrogate, is the largest section of the Order, with some 1,700 Lodges across the country. In addition to support and care of their members and the community at large, each year the Grand Primo nominates a charity for nationwide support by the organisation.  There are three main levels within the order, The Minor Lodge acting at local level, The Provincial Grand Lodge acting at regional level and The Grand Lodge acting at national Level.  The R.A.O.B. at all levels supports its community and, through its charitable works, raises many millions of pounds for worthwhile causes.   The Grand Lodge of England owns two convalescent homes, one in Harrogate, where the organisation also has its head quarters, and the other in Weston Super Mare.  These provide facilities for ‘Brothers’ and their families.  Membership of the organisation is open to all adult males without distinction to social position, religious faith or political beliefs. The RAOB strives to maintain good relationships with the local community and quietly goes about supporting community projects and trying to attract like minded people to join them in the charitable works they do.
