Signs and symptoms of liver disease

The signs and symptoms of liver disease can vary greatly from child to child and between the 100 different liver diseases which can affect children. This is one reason liver disease can be hard to diagnose. However below is a list of some of the main indicators of liver disease in children:

• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes)
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Yellow urine
• Grey or pale coloured stools
• Change of sleep patterns
• Vomiting of blood
• Passing of blood in the stools and urine
• Tiredness or loss of stamina
• Abdominal swelling caused by a large liver or large spleen or excess fluid in the abdomen
• Itching / pruritis
• Poor weight gain
• Abdominal pain
• Portal Hypertension
