Pioneering New Treatment at Kings College Hospital

16/11/11

Catherine Arkley, Chief Executive of CLDF commented: “We welcome the news from Kings College Hospital that a pioneering treatment - involving injecting donor liver cells into the abdomen of a baby whose liver had started to fail – has avoided the need for transplant. Click here for the BBC story

“We are particularly pleased to hear of this success because ten years ago we helped fund research into liver cell transplant at King’s College Hospital with a grant of over £225,000."

“Although liver transplant in children is now an established medical procedure, as the charity which provides support to the many families whose children are awaiting or have gone through transplant, we are all too aware of the medical and emotional issues involved and the fact that transplant is not a ‘cure’."

“Whilst the success of this treatment is wonderful news, we are conscious that this technique is still at its trial stage and will not be suitable for every patient.  This development does, however, highlight the importance of ongoing research into all aspects of childhood liver disease which affects two new children in the UK every single day.”
