CLDF statement re House of Commons debate on alcohol pricing

14/12/11

Children’s Liver Disease Foundation is dedicated to supporting the many children and young people in the UK who are living with a potentially life threatening liver condition which has nothing to do with their own behaviour or lifestyle choices or that of their parents.
We do, however, accept the overwhelming evidence presented by the medical profession that high levels of alcohol consumption, particularly amongst young people, are resulting, in alcohol related liver disease presenting itself at a younger age.
Whilst alcoholic liver disease is rarely seen in childhood we recognise the need to effect behaviour change. We therefore wholeheartedly support measures which can be taken to discourage binge drinking and promote a healthy lifestyle, including a minimum price for alcohol sold in shops and supermarkets.
