2005 October 27 - Charity Bowlers Look Striking

A local woman is organising a cross-dressing bowling match early next month to raise funds for the charity which offered vital support when her younger brother was diagnosed with liver failure.

Dominique Griffith (19) from Oakford Avenue, Weston Super Mare, has organised the match in aid of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, the only organisation in the UK fighting to stamp out childhood liver disease.

The match takes from 6.30pm on Tuesday 8th November at AMF bowling, Dolphin Square, where Dominique is a receptionist.  Friends and colleagues are raising sponsorship to take part in the event and the public is invited to come along to view the spectacle.

Dominique’s younger brother, Samuel (10), was diagnosed with liver failure at the age of two.  Fortunately a donor liver was found in time for him to have a life saving liver transplant.  Children’s Liver Disease Foundation offered emotional and practical support to the family during this time and continues to do so.

Dominique says, “I have seen first hand the brilliant way in which the Foundation helps children with liver disease and their families and I really wanted to help ensure that other families receive support in the future.

“The bowling alley seemed the perfect place to hold a fundraising event, but I wanted to do something a bit different.  Cross dressing sprang to mind and people have really got into the spirit of things with over fifteen people taking part.  I am sure there will be some shocking sights on the night!”

Dominique has also organised a raffle on the night to raise extra funds with local companies donating prizes including under 18’s and over 18’s hampers.

Catherine Arkley, Chief Executive of the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation said: "Most people don't realise that two children a day are diagnosed in this country - that's greater than the incidence of childhood leukaemia. Many of these diseases are life threatening, but all mean a lifetime of care. Each year we need to raise more money to fund new research projects, educate more healthcare professionals and support more families and we are extremely grateful to Dominique for organising this unique fundraising event."
