2005 October 12 - Time running out for marathon runners to help thousands of sick children

A unique national children's charity is appealing to potential London Marathon runners to apply for a place in next year's race before it's too late.

The Children's Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) fights childhood liver disease and is hoping to increase its income to £1million next year to help fund pioneering research, educate healthcare professionals and support the thousands of families affected.

Catherine Arkley, chief executive of CLDF, said: "Not many people realise that at least two children a day are diagnosed with a liver disease in this country - that's higher than the incidence of childhood leukaemia. And, thanks to advances in transplant technology, children are also living longer so need our continued support into adulthood. We therefore need to raise more money every year to help these incredibly deserving families.

"The closing date for applications to enter next year's London Marathon is the 21st October, so anyone who is interested in running and raising money for CLDF has only a little time left to apply. We often find that as people reach milestone birthdays they take the opportunity to run the London Marathon."

James Swann from Callow Hill, near Redditch, ran on behalf of the Foundation this year, finishing in 4hrs 11 minutes and raising over £1800 in the process. He was bowled over by the experience: "It was amazing. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the roads, cheering us on; the atmosphere was unforgettable. I'd go so far as to say that the Government should make it compulsory for everyone to run the London Marathon at least once in their lives!

"The Foundation organises a great post-race reception and really looks after you with lots of fundraising support and encouragement in the run up to the race. When we found out about the great work CLDF does, it made me realise just how lucky I and my wife are to have two healthy children, so I was keen to help raise some money in this way."

Entry forms for the 2006 London Marathon are available at sports shops around the UK. Further information on stockists is available by visiting www.london-marathon.co.uk.
