Supporting the whole family - the ripple effect of liver disease
At CLDF, we understand that liver disease does not just affect the child and the parents, its impact can be far-reaching. In common with any chronic disease, it affects the extended family, friends and colleagues. No-one is left untouched. We know that siblings and grandparents in particular may need support. Grandparents tell us that they often feel unable to express their own concerns and fears, not wanting to add to the family’s distress. They not only worry about their grandchild, but for their child too. Often they ask what they can do. One of the most useful things a grandparent can do is to help with practical things; filling the freezer with meals, help with the gardening, keeping the house clean or doing the laundry. It may not be rocket science but these little things can really make the difference between a family coping and not coping. If you are grandparent and want to talk to one of our family support officers, please call 0121 212 6023, or click here to send an email. Finding that life revolves around your ill brother or sister can also be difficult and frustrating. Parents can be away from home for lengthy periods of time, and you may need to stay with relatives or friends of the family. CLDF’s young persons support officer, is on hand to offer support and a listening ear.
