An Introduction to Liver Units

There are three specialist paediatric liver centres that care for children with liver disease. They are also known as tertiary centres and are funded by a separate NHS group called the National Specialist Commissioning Advisory Group (NSCAG). For more information on NSCAG click here. The specialist centres also act as referral centres for regional hospitals in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The three specialist centres are:

The Liver Unit, Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Trust

The Liver & GI Unit, St James's University Hospital, Leeds

Paediatric Liver Service, King's College Hospital, London

Around the UK there are a number of regional hospitals caring for children with a liver disease and sometimes sharing the care with a specialist centre too. Most units are led by a consultant paediatric gastroenterologist who has an interest in children with a liver disease. They work closely with the specialist centres.

If you would like to speak to someone about specialist services for children with a liver disease, please call the CLDF Support Team on 0121 212 6023 or click here to send an email.
