Elena's transplant story

Written by Mel on 08/09/2017 12:36

To help raise awareness in Organ Donation Week 2017, Mel kindly shared her daughter Elena's story...

This is our daughter Elena. The photo was taken just before she went to theatre to undergo a multi visceral transplant. Elena received 5 organs in total: stomach, liver, pancreas, small intestine and colon.

Elena before transplant

We are merely at the beginning of the long road to recovery (only two weeks post transplant). We have already experienced a few bumps along the way but we are being well supported and the care Elena is receiving to aid her recovery is outstanding.

As a mother of a child on the transplant waiting list, I often tried to imagine what it would be like to get 'the call'. I can honestly say that from the moment we received the call at 4:44am to the time she went into theatre at 6:00pm could not have gone any better. We were well informed every step of the way and supported throughout the whole process by everyone around us.

A few words now can make an extraordinary difference. Tell your family how you feel about organ donation this Organ Donation Week. Find out more on the NHS Organ Donation website.
